Why Cleansing Your Crystals Matters

Crystals are quiet workhorses. Whether you keep one in your pocket, on your nightstand, or arranged on a windowsill, they're constantly interacting with the energy around them—your moods, your space, the hands of everyone who has touched them. Over time, many people feel their stones grow "heavy" or simply less vivid. Cleansing is the practice of returning a crystal to a clear, neutral state so it can hold your intentions freshly.

Think of cleansing less as scrubbing away dirt and more as resetting a device. You don't need expensive tools or a perfect ritual. You need a method that suits the stone, a moment of attention, and a little consistency. Below are seven safe, time-tested ways to cleanse your crystals—choose whichever fits your stones and your lifestyle.

1. Running Water

Water is the most intuitive cleansing method. Hold your crystal under cool running water (a stream or filtered tap both work) for 30 to 60 seconds, picturing the day's residue washing away. Pat it dry with a soft cloth.

The catch: water is not safe for every stone. Soft, porous, or metallic minerals can dull, flake, or even dissolve. Before you reach for the faucet, check our guide to crystals that should never touch water—it covers selenite, malachite, pyrite, and other stones that need a dry method instead.

2. Smoke (Smudging)

Passing a crystal through fragrant smoke is one of the oldest cleansing traditions. Light a bundle of dried herbs—sage, cedar, rosemary, or sustainably sourced palo santo—let it smolder, then move your stone through the smoke for 20 to 30 seconds while setting a clear intention.

Smoke is gentle and works on every crystal, including water-sensitive ones. Keep a window cracked for ventilation, and never leave a smoldering bundle unattended.

3. Sound

Sound cleansing uses vibration rather than substance, which makes it wonderfully safe for delicate stones. Strike a singing bowl, ring a bell, or play a tuning fork near your crystals and let the tone wash over them. The sustained vibration is thought to shake loose stagnant energy and re-tune the stone.

This method is ideal when you want to cleanse many crystals at once—a whole shelf or grid can be reset with a single sustained tone.

4. Moonlight

Setting crystals out under the moon, especially a full moon, both cleanses and gently charges them. Place your stones on a windowsill or outside overnight and bring them in before the morning sun if you're worried about fading.

Because moonlight does double duty, it pairs naturally with charging. If you want to go deeper on energizing your stones afterward, our companion piece on how to charge crystals with moonlight, sun and more walks through the full process step by step.

5. Salt

Dry salt is a classic absorber of heavy energy. Bury your crystal in a bowl of sea salt or pink salt for several hours to overnight, then brush it off completely.

Two cautions: avoid salt water for porous stones, and don't reuse the salt for cooking—discard it once it has done its job. Some softer crystals can be scratched by salt grains, so for those, choose smoke or sound instead.

6. Earth

Returning a crystal to the soil reconnects it with the ground it came from. Bury your stone in a garden bed or a pot of earth for 24 hours to a few days, marking the spot so you don't lose it. This method is grounding and especially fitting for crystals you use for stability or root-chakra work.

Use earth burial sparingly for water-sensitive or soft stones, since damp soil carries the same risks as water.

7. Other Crystals

Certain crystals cleanse other crystals. A clear quartz cluster, a bed of amethyst, or a slab of selenite can recharge smaller stones placed on top of them overnight. Selenite is a favorite because it's believed to clear and never need clearing itself—though, being water-sensitive, it should only ever be dusted, never rinsed.

This is the lowest-effort option: keep a cleansing crystal on your altar or shelf and let it quietly maintain your collection.

How Often Should You Cleanse?

There's no rigid schedule, but a few signals are worth noticing:

  • After you first bring a crystal home
  • Following intense emotional days or heavy use
  • When a stone feels dull, sticky, or "off"
  • Anytime someone else handles your personal stones

A gentle rhythm—say, monthly, aligned with the full moon—keeps most collections fresh without it becoming a chore.

Cleansing Is the First Step, Not the Last

A cleansed crystal is a blank slate, which is exactly why cleansing pairs so well with intention-setting. Once your stone is clear, you can direct it toward a specific purpose. Our guide on how to program crystals with intention shows you how to "install" a focus—calm, courage, clarity—right after a cleanse, so the reset doesn't go to waste.

The most important ingredient in any of these methods is your own presence. A rushed rinse does less than a mindful one. Slow down, breathe, and let cleansing become a small ritual of care rather than a task to check off.
