Aura Reading: A Complete Guide to Seeing and Understanding Energy Fields

Every living being is surrounded by a field of energy — a luminous, multi-layered emanation that extends beyond the physical body and carries information about the being's physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual state. This energy field is known as the aura, and learning to perceive and interpret it is one of the most fascinating and rewarding skills in the realm of spiritual development.

Aura reading is not the exclusive province of psychics and mystics. While some people are born with a natural ability to see auras, the skill can be developed by anyone willing to practice. The aura is always present, always communicating — you simply need to learn its language.

What Is an Aura?

The aura is a field of electromagnetic energy that surrounds and interpenetrates the physical body. It is composed of multiple layers, each vibrating at a different frequency and carrying information about a different dimension of the being.

The concept of the aura appears in virtually every spiritual tradition. In Hinduism, it is associated with the concept of "prana" — the life force that animates all living things. In Chinese medicine, it corresponds to "qi" — the vital energy that flows through the body's meridian system. In Christianity, the halo depicted around saints and angels is a representation of the aura. In indigenous traditions worldwide, healers and shamans work with the energy field as a matter of course.

Modern science has begun to validate the existence of the aura through technologies like Kirlian photography, which captures the electromagnetic field surrounding living organisms, and biofield imaging, which measures the subtle energy emissions of the human body.

The Seven Layers of the Aura

The aura is traditionally described as having seven layers, each corresponding to one of the seven chakras and representing a different dimension of the being.

The Etheric Body (1st Layer): The layer closest to the physical body, extending about one to two inches beyond the skin. It carries information about physical health, vitality, and the body's energy patterns. It often appears as a bluish-gray or whitish glow.

The Emotional Body (2nd Layer): Extends about one to three inches beyond the etheric body. It carries information about emotions and feelings, and its colors change constantly in response to emotional states. It is often the most colorful and dynamic layer.

The Mental Body (3rd Layer): Extends about three to eight inches beyond the emotional body. It carries information about thoughts, beliefs, and mental patterns. It often appears as a bright yellow light, particularly around the head.

The Astral Body (4th Layer): Extends about six to twelve inches beyond the mental body. It is the bridge between the lower, personal layers and the higher, spiritual layers. It carries information about love, relationships, and heart-centered connections. It often appears in the full spectrum of colors.

The Etheric Template (5th Layer): Extends about one to two feet beyond the astral body. It is the blueprint for the etheric body and carries information about the soul's purpose and the body's ideal state of health.

The Celestial Body (6th Layer): Extends about two to three feet beyond the etheric template. It carries information about spiritual experience, unconditional love, and ecstatic states. It often appears as shimmering, opalescent light.

The Ketheric Template (7th Layer): The outermost layer, extending about three feet or more beyond the body. It carries information about the soul's connection to the divine, the life purpose, and the accumulated wisdom of all lifetimes. It often appears as a golden or silvery light.

How to See Auras

Soft Gaze Technique

The most fundamental technique for seeing auras is the soft gaze. Rather than looking directly at a person with focused vision, you relax your eyes and allow them to go slightly out of focus — similar to the way you might look at a Magic Eye image.

Practice:

  1. Have someone stand against a plain, light-colored wall
  2. Stand about 10 feet away and look at the area just above and around their head and shoulders
  3. Relax your eyes — do not stare or strain
  4. Let your peripheral vision do the work
  5. You may first notice a thin, white or grayish glow around the body — this is the etheric layer
  6. With continued practice, you may begin to see colors in the outer layers

Palm Gazing

Before trying to see another person's aura, practice seeing your own.

Practice:

  1. Hold your hands about 12 inches apart against a white or light background
  2. Relax your gaze and look at the space between your hands
  3. Slowly bring your hands closer together and then further apart
  4. Notice any haze, glow, or color that appears between and around your fingertips
  5. With practice, you may see wisps of energy connecting your hands

Candle Technique

Practice:

  1. Sit in a dimly lit room with a lit candle in front of you
  2. Gaze at the candle flame with a soft focus for about 30 seconds
  3. Then shift your gaze to a point just beside the flame
  4. Notice the colors and patterns you see around the flame
  5. This exercise develops the kind of peripheral, soft-focus vision that is used in aura reading

Nature Practice

Trees and plants have auras that are often easier to see than human auras, because they do not move and their energy is relatively simple and stable.

Practice:

  1. Find a tree against a clear sky background
  2. Relax your gaze and look at the outline of the tree
  3. Notice any glow, shimmer, or coloration around the edges of the tree
  4. Trees often display a green or golden aura that is visible even to beginners

Aura Colors and Their Meanings

While aura colors are highly individual and context-dependent, there are general associations that can serve as a starting point for interpretation.

Red

Red in the aura is associated with physical energy, passion, strength, and vitality. A bright, clear red indicates healthy physical energy and strong life force. A dark or muddy red may indicate anger, frustration, or physical stress.

Orange

Orange is associated with creativity, sensuality, emotional expression, and social connection. A bright orange indicates creative vitality and emotional openness. A dark or cloudy orange may indicate emotional instability or addictive tendencies.

Yellow

Yellow is associated with intellect, optimism, clarity, and personal power. A bright yellow indicates mental clarity and intellectual confidence. A pale yellow may indicate emerging psychic awareness. A dark yellow may indicate excessive analytical thinking or fear of losing control.

Green

Green is associated with the heart, healing, growth, and balance. A bright green indicates a strong capacity for healing and compassion. An emerald green is often seen in natural healers. A dark or murky green may indicate jealousy, resentment, or feeling victimized.

Blue

Blue is associated with communication, truth, peace, and spiritual awareness. A bright blue indicates clear communication and a calm, peaceful nature. A royal blue indicates spiritual depth and strong intuition. A light blue indicates a nurturing, caring personality.

Indigo

Indigo is associated with intuition, psychic ability, and deep spiritual awareness. It is commonly seen in the auras of people who are highly intuitive or who have strong psychic abilities. A clear indigo indicates deep inner knowing and spiritual maturity.

Violet/Purple

Violet is associated with spiritual vision, higher consciousness, and divine connection. It is often seen in the auras of spiritual teachers, mystics, and healers. A bright violet indicates a strong connection to the spiritual realm and a deep commitment to spiritual growth.

White

White in the aura is associated with purity, truth, and divine protection. It is sometimes seen as a brilliant light surrounding the entire body, indicating a high level of spiritual development or a state of divine grace.

Gold

Gold is associated with divine protection, spiritual wisdom, and enlightenment. It is sometimes seen as a halo-like glow around the head of someone who is deeply connected to their spiritual purpose.

Pink

Pink is associated with unconditional love, gentleness, and compassion. It is often seen in the auras of people who are naturally loving and nurturing. A soft pink indicates tenderness and affection.

Black or Gray

Dark colors in the aura often indicate areas of blockage, stagnation, or unresolved issues. They do not necessarily mean anything negative about the person — they simply indicate areas where energy is not flowing freely and where attention and healing may be needed.

Sensing Auras Without Seeing Them

Not everyone perceives auras visually. Many people sense auras through other channels — feeling, knowing, hearing, or simply intuiting the energy around a person. These non-visual forms of aura perception are just as valid and just as useful as visual perception.

Feeling (clairsentience): You may feel the aura as a temperature change, a tingling sensation, or a pressure when you move your hands near someone's body.

Knowing (claircognizance): You may simply know things about a person's energy state without seeing or feeling anything specific.

Hearing (clairaudience): You may receive information about someone's aura as words, sounds, or music in your inner ear.

Aura Cleansing and Strengthening

Cleansing Your Aura

Just as your physical body needs regular cleaning, your aura benefits from regular cleansing. Aura cleansing removes stagnant energy, emotional residue from interactions with others, and negative thought patterns.

Methods include smudging with sage, bathing in salt water, spending time in nature, practicing breathwork, visualizing white light flowing through your energy field, and using sound (singing bowls, tuning forks, or chanting).

Strengthening Your Aura

A strong, healthy aura provides natural protection against negative energies and supports overall wellbeing. You can strengthen your aura through regular meditation, physical exercise, spending time in nature, eating clean and vibrant foods, maintaining positive relationships, and practicing gratitude.

Aura Reading as Spiritual Practice

Aura reading is more than a parlor trick or a psychic party skill. It is a genuine spiritual practice that develops your sensitivity to the subtle dimensions of reality, deepens your compassion for others, and enhances your understanding of the complex, multi-dimensional nature of human beings.

As you develop your aura reading abilities, you may find that your entire perception of the world shifts. You begin to see people not just as physical bodies but as luminous beings of energy, each carrying a unique and beautiful pattern of light. You begin to feel the interconnection between all living things and to recognize the subtle energies that bind us together in a web of shared consciousness.

This expanded perception is one of the great gifts of spiritual practice. It transforms ordinary seeing into extraordinary seeing, and in doing so, it transforms you.

Common Questions About Auras

Can everyone learn to see auras? Yes. While some people have a natural gift for perceiving auras, the ability can be developed through practice. Like learning a musical instrument, it takes time and consistency, but almost anyone can develop at least a basic level of aura perception.

Do auras change? Absolutely. Your aura changes constantly in response to your thoughts, emotions, health, and environment. The overall color pattern tends to remain fairly stable and reflects your fundamental personality, but the specific colors and their intensity shift from moment to moment.

Can auras be photographed? Technologies like Kirlian photography and aura photography cameras capture electromagnetic emissions from the body that some interpret as aura images. While these technologies are controversial in scientific circles, many people find them useful as starting points for understanding their energy.

Do animals and plants have auras? Yes. All living things have energy fields, and many aura readers find that animal and plant auras are among the easiest to perceive. Trees in particular often display vivid, easily visible auras.

Can you read your own aura? Yes, though it can be more challenging than reading others' auras because of the difficulty of maintaining the right visual perspective. The palm gazing technique and mirror gazing are both effective methods for self-reading.

Your aura is shining right now. It has been shining since the moment you were born. Learning to see it — in yourself and in others — is one of the most beautiful journeys you can take.
