Planetary Aspects in Astrology: The Complete Guide

A complete guide to planetary aspects in astrology: conjunctions, oppositions, trines, squares, and sextiles, plus orbs and how to read aspects in your chart.

Why Planetary Aspects Are the Grammar of a Chart

If the planets are the words of your birth chart and the signs and houses are their setting, then the aspects are the grammar that ties everything into meaning. An aspect is simply an angle between two planets, measured around the 360-degree wheel of the chart. That angle describes how the two planets talk to each other, whether they cooperate, compete, blend, or pull in opposite directions.

Learning aspects is the moment astrology stops being a list of isolated traits and starts becoming a coherent story. A chart with a harmonious Sun and Moon reads very differently from one where they are at odds, even if every other placement is identical. This guide walks through the major aspects, how to spot them, and how to read them without reducing them to "good" or "bad."

The Five Major Aspects

Astrologers prioritize five core angles, often called the Ptolemaic aspects. Each carries a distinct quality.

  • Conjunction (0°) fuses two planets so their energies blend and amplify each other. A Sun-Mercury conjunction, for instance, ties identity tightly to thinking.
  • Opposition (180°) places planets across from each other, creating tension that asks for balance, often playing out through other people.
  • Trine (120°) is the easy flow aspect. The planets support each other naturally, sometimes so smoothly that the gift goes unnoticed.
  • Square (90°) generates productive friction. Squares are where growth happens, because the discomfort pushes you to act and integrate.
  • Sextile (60°) offers opportunity. It is gentler than a trine and usually requires a little effort to activate.

A helpful frame: trines and sextiles tend to feel supportive, while squares and oppositions create the dynamic tension that drives a life forward. Neither is better. A chart of only trines can lack motivation, while squares often build the very strengths a person is known for.

Hard vs. Soft Aspects, Without the Judgment

It is tempting to read soft aspects as fortunate and hard aspects as cursed, but seasoned practice resists that shortcut. Hard aspects, the squares and oppositions, describe internal tension that demands resolution, and that very tension is often the engine of achievement and depth. Soft aspects describe natural talent that can be taken for granted precisely because it comes easily.

The most useful reading asks what each aspect is for. A Mars-Saturn square might describe frustration early in life and disciplined mastery later. A Venus-Jupiter trine might bring warmth and generosity that the person barely has to work for. Aspects describe potential and tendency, not fixed outcomes.

These planetary relationships also show up vividly between two charts. If you are curious how your aspects interact with someone else's, our guide to synastry house overlays shows where another person's planets land in your life, and aspects describe the quality of those meetings.

Orbs: How Close Is Close Enough?

Aspects are rarely exact, so astrologers allow a margin called an orb. The closer two planets are to the precise angle, the stronger the aspect feels.

General orb guidelines:

  • Conjunctions and oppositions: up to about 8 degrees.
  • Trines and squares: up to about 6 to 8 degrees.
  • Sextiles: a tighter orb, often 3 to 4 degrees.

Aspects involving the Sun or Moon are usually granted wider orbs because those luminaries are so central. The takeaway is simple: a 1-degree square is loud and unmistakable in a life, while a 7-degree sextile is a soft background hum. When you read a chart, weight the tight aspects most heavily.

The Minor Aspects Worth Knowing

Beyond the big five, a few minor aspects add nuance:

  • Quincunx (150°) links planets that have nothing in common, creating a persistent need for adjustment.
  • Semisextile (30°) is a subtle, slightly awkward connection between neighboring signs.
  • Quintile (72°) is associated with creativity and a distinctive personal gift.

Beginners can safely focus on the major aspects first and add the minors once the core grammar feels natural. There is no rush.

How to Read Aspects in Your Own Chart

Start by finding your tightest aspects, the ones within a degree or two of exact, and read those first. They tend to describe the loudest themes in your life. Then notice which planets are most "aspected," meaning connected to many others. A heavily aspected planet usually plays a central role in how you operate.

Pay attention to aspect patterns, too. A grand trine, a T-square, or a stellium woven by aspects often describes a defining life dynamic far more than any single placement.

Finally, remember that aspects are activated over time by the moving sky. A natal square can lie quiet for years and then come alive when a transiting planet contacts it. Our beginner's guide to astrological transits explains exactly how current planetary movements trigger your natal aspects, turning a static chart into a living calendar.

When you are ready to see your own aspects mapped clearly, AstraTalk's birth chart reading calculates every angle and orb for you, so you can move straight to interpretation. Aspects are the grammar of your story; once you can read them, the whole chart begins to speak in full sentences.
