Human Design Centers: Complete Guide to All 9 Centers

The nine centers in your Human Design BodyGraph are the foundation of your energetic makeup. Each center governs specific aspects of your life, from how you think and communicate to how you love, work, and survive. Understanding your defined and undefined centers is one of the most practical and immediately useful aspects of Human Design.

Defined vs. Undefined: The Core Distinction

Before exploring each center, it is crucial to understand the fundamental difference between defined and undefined centers.

Defined Centers (Colored In)

A defined center is one that has at least one complete Channel running through it, meaning both Gates on either end of the Channel are activated. When a center is defined:

  • You have consistent, reliable energy in that area
  • You broadcast that energy into the world
  • Others receive your energy through their undefined centers
  • This energy is not easily influenced by others
  • It represents a fixed aspect of your nature

Undefined Centers (White/Open)

An undefined center has no complete Channel running through it. It may have one or more hanging Gates (activated Gates without the connecting Gate to complete a Channel) or it may be completely open (no activated Gates at all). When a center is undefined:

  • You take in and amplify the energy from others' defined centers
  • You experience this energy inconsistently — it comes and goes based on who is around you
  • This is where you are most susceptible to conditioning
  • It is also where you develop the deepest wisdom over time
  • The Not-Self themes of each center show up most strongly here

Completely Open Centers

A completely open center has no Gates activated at all. This is the most amplified and most potentially wise version of an undefined center. You take in everything with zero filtering, making you extremely sensitive to that energy but also giving you the widest perspective.

The Nine Centers

1. Head Center (Crown)

Location: The triangle at the very top of the BodyGraph

Governs: Inspiration, mental pressure, questions, doubt

Biological Connection: Pineal gland

Function: The Head Center is a pressure center. It creates pressure to think, to ask questions, to seek answers, and to be inspired. It is the fuel for the mind's activity.

When Defined (36% of people): You have a consistent way of being inspired and a reliable pressure to think about things. Your mental activity is internally generated and not dependent on others. You know which questions matter to you and are not easily swayed by others' mental pursuits.

When Undefined (64% of people): You take in and amplify others' mental pressure and inspiration. You may find yourself chasing questions that are not yours, feeling pressured to figure things out, or being inspired by everyone else's ideas. The wisdom here is learning which questions are truly yours and which you have absorbed from others.

Not-Self Question: "Am I trying to answer questions that do not matter to me?"

2. Ajna Center (Mind)

Location: The triangle below the Head Center

Governs: Conceptualization, thinking, mental processing, opinions, beliefs

Biological Connection: Pituitary gland (anterior)

Function: The Ajna processes the inspiration from the Head Center into concepts, opinions, and beliefs. It is where thinking happens, where data is organized, and where certainty or uncertainty about ideas lives.

When Defined (47% of people): You have a consistent way of processing information and forming opinions. Your mental framework is reliable and not easily changed by others. You have a fixed way of thinking that gives you certainty about your ideas.

When Undefined (53% of people): You can see multiple perspectives and are not fixed in how you think. You amplify others' certainty and may mistake it for your own. The wisdom is the ability to consider many viewpoints without becoming attached to any single one. The challenge is pretending to be certain when you are not.

Not-Self Question: "Am I pretending to be certain about things I am actually open about?"

3. Throat Center

Location: The square in the middle-upper area of the BodyGraph

Governs: Communication, expression, manifestation, metabolism, thyroid function

Biological Connection: Thyroid and parathyroid glands

Function: The Throat is the center of manifestation. Everything that happens in the material world must pass through the Throat. It is about communication, expression, and the transformation of energy into form.

When Defined (72% of people): You have a consistent way of communicating and expressing yourself. Your voice and your ability to manifest through action are reliable. People tend to hear you when you speak.

When Undefined (28% of people): You amplify others' communication energy. You may talk too much trying to get attention, or you may struggle to be heard. The wisdom is knowing when to speak and when to stay silent. The challenge is trying to attract attention through speech.

Not-Self Question: "Am I talking just to get attention?"

4. G Center (Self/Identity)

Location: The diamond shape in the center of the BodyGraph

Governs: Identity, direction in life, love, the magnetic monopole

Biological Connection: Liver, blood

Function: The G Center is the center of identity and direction. It houses the magnetic monopole, which holds together the illusion of your separate self and guides you through life along your correct geometric trajectory.

When Defined (57% of people): You have a consistent sense of identity and direction. You know who you are and where you are going (even if you cannot articulate it). Your love and sense of self are reliable and not dependent on others.

When Undefined (43% of people): Your sense of identity and direction shifts depending on who you are with and where you are. You may wonder "Who am I?" and "Where am I going?" frequently. The wisdom is understanding that identity is not fixed and that you can experience the full range of human identity. The challenge is searching for a fixed identity or direction.

Not-Self Question: "Am I searching for a fixed identity or direction?"

5. Heart/Will Center (Ego)

Location: The small triangle on the right side of the BodyGraph

Governs: Willpower, ego, self-worth, value, material resources, the material world

Biological Connection: Heart, stomach, gall bladder, thymus

Function: The Heart Center is about willpower, value, and the material world. It governs your ability to make promises and follow through, your sense of self-worth, and your relationship with material resources and money.

When Defined (30% of people): You have consistent access to willpower. You can make promises and follow through. You have a natural sense of your own value and worth. You can exert your will when necessary.

When Undefined (70% of people): You amplify others' willpower and may overcommit trying to prove your worth. You may struggle with self-esteem, constantly trying to demonstrate your value. The wisdom is understanding that you do not need to prove anything. The challenge is making promises you cannot keep and pushing your will beyond its capacity.

Not-Self Question: "Am I trying to prove my worth?"

6. Sacral Center

Location: The square below the G Center

Governs: Life-force energy, sexuality, fertility, work capacity, vitality

Biological Connection: Ovaries, testes

Function: The Sacral is the most powerful motor in the BodyGraph. It is the source of life-force energy, the energy for work, creation, and reproduction. It regenerates through sleep and is designed to be used fully each day.

When Defined (70% of people — Generators and Manifesting Generators): You have consistent access to sustainable life-force energy. Your Sacral responds with gut-level yes/no signals. You are designed to use this energy through work you love, and it recharges through sleep.

When Undefined (30% of people — Manifestors, Projectors, Reflectors): You do not have your own consistent life-force energy. You take in and amplify the Sacral energy of others, which can make you feel incredibly energized when around Generators but depleted when alone. The wisdom is knowing when enough is enough. The challenge is not knowing when to stop working because you are running on borrowed energy.

Not-Self Question: "Am I not knowing when enough is enough?"

7. Solar Plexus Center (Emotional Center)

Location: The triangle on the lower right of the BodyGraph

Governs: Emotions, feelings, moods, desires, passion, sensitivity, the emotional wave

Biological Connection: Kidneys, prostate, pancreas, nervous system, lungs

Function: The Solar Plexus is both a motor and an awareness center. It generates emotional energy in waves and is the source of all emotional experience. It is evolving to become the primary awareness center of humanity.

When Defined (50% of people): You have a consistent emotional wave. Your moods cycle from highs to lows regardless of external circumstances. You need to wait for emotional clarity before making decisions. You broadcast your emotional energy into the world, affecting everyone around you.

When Undefined (50% of people): You take in and amplify others' emotions. You may feel emotions intensely that are not yours. The wisdom is being able to feel the emotional landscape without being identified with it. The challenge is avoiding confrontation and truth to maintain emotional peace.

Not-Self Question: "Am I avoiding confrontation and truth?"

8. Spleen Center

Location: The triangle on the lower left of the BodyGraph

Governs: Intuition, immune system, survival instincts, timing, health, safety, fear

Biological Connection: Lymphatic system, spleen, T-cells

Function: The Spleen is the oldest awareness center. It is about moment-to-moment survival, intuition, health, and well-being. It communicates through instantaneous, quiet, one-time signals.

When Defined (55% of people): You have consistent access to intuitive knowing about health, safety, and timing. Your immune system tends to be reliable. You have a steady baseline sense of well-being.

When Undefined (45% of people): You amplify others' fears and health concerns. You may hold onto things (relationships, jobs, habits) that are no longer healthy because you fear letting go. The wisdom is learning to release what is no longer serving you. The challenge is holding on too long.

Not-Self Question: "Am I holding on to what is not good for me?"

9. Root Center

Location: The square at the very bottom of the BodyGraph

Governs: Adrenaline, stress, drive, pressure, kundalini energy, depression cycles

Biological Connection: Adrenal glands

Function: The Root is a pressure center and a motor. It creates the pressure to do, to move, to evolve, and to adapt. This pressure, when channeled correctly, becomes fuel for action and growth.

When Defined (60% of people): You have a consistent relationship with stress and pressure. You process adrenaline in a reliable way and can handle pressure without being overwhelmed. You have your own internal drive.

When Undefined (40% of people): You amplify others' stress and adrenaline. You may feel a constant urgency to get things done, rushing through life to relieve the pressure. The wisdom is learning that not all pressure needs to be acted on immediately. The challenge is being in a hurry to be free of the pressure.

Not-Self Question: "Am I in a hurry to get things done to relieve pressure?"

Working with Your Centers

For Defined Centers

  1. Recognize your consistent energy. This is who you are reliably.
  2. Share your energy generously. You naturally broadcast this energy to others.
  3. Do not be surprised when others do not operate the same way. Your consistency is your design, not a universal truth.
  4. Use this energy in alignment with your Type and Authority. Your defined centers are tools for living your design.

For Undefined Centers

  1. Notice when you are amplifying others' energy. Awareness is the first step.
  2. Ask the Not-Self question. When you notice yourself in the Not-Self pattern, pause and check in with your Authority.
  3. Develop wisdom. Your open centers are where you become wise through experience and awareness.
  4. Do not try to make them defined. You are not meant to have consistent energy in these areas. Embrace the openness.
  5. Choose your environment and companions wisely. You will amplify whoever is around you.

The Conditioning Process

Conditioning happens primarily through undefined centers. From the moment you are born, you are surrounded by people whose defined centers broadcast energy into your undefined centers. Over time, you begin to identify with this energy as your own, creating a false self or Not-Self.

The Human Design experiment is largely about deconditioning, recognizing where you have been living from your undefined centers' Not-Self patterns and returning to your true nature as defined by your Type, Strategy, and Authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many defined centers can a person have? It ranges from zero (Reflectors) to all nine, though having all nine defined is extremely rare. Most people have between three and six defined centers.

Does having more defined centers make me more powerful? No. Defined and undefined centers are different, not better or worse. Having many undefined centers means more wisdom potential. Having many defined centers means more consistent energy.

Can I strengthen an undefined center? You cannot make an undefined center defined. However, you can develop wisdom in that area through awareness and experience. The Not-Self patterns decrease as wisdom increases.

Why do I feel so different around different people? Your undefined centers take in and amplify the energy of whoever is around you. Different people define different centers in your chart, creating different experiences.

Is it bad to have completely open centers? Not at all. Completely open centers have the greatest potential for wisdom because they take in the widest range of energy without filtering.

Understanding your centers is one of the most practically useful aspects of Human Design. It explains why you feel different around different people, why certain environments affect you more than others, and where your greatest wisdom lies waiting to be discovered.
